Metrics and Analytics: lj 3

In chapter 6 of the textbook "Social Media Communication: Concepts, Practices, Data, Law and Ethics" we learned about the metrics and analytics of social media. Metrics and analytics can help individuals better understand their social media usage patterns, such as how often they check their accounts or how much time they spend on each platform. This information can be used to make more informed decisions about when and how to use social media. By understanding engagement metrics such as likes, comments, and shares, individuals can tailor their social media content to be more engaging and appealing to their followers. Knowing about internet analytics such as how search engines are optimized and web traffic operates can help individuals find information more efficiently and use the internet more effectively.  Metrics and analytics are critical for businesses to understand how well their social media campaigns are performing, which posts are most effective, and how to optimize...

Time Diary

Over the last four days I have been using my phones "screen time" tracking ability to document my usage of social media. I will be discussing my social media usage from February 18th, 2023 to February 21st, 2023.  February 18th, 2023 - On this day my social media use began at around 8:00 am when I first woke up. In the morning I used social media to kill some time before I had to get out of bed and ready for work. That was about 35 minutes worth of time spent on apps like Twitter, Instagram, and Tik Tok. My social media usage then went quiet from 10:00 am till 3:30 pm, that is when I began my lunch break. I spent about 15 minutes browsing twitter during my lunch break and did not use it till I had gotten off work at 7:00 pm. That is when I spent another hour and half browsing social media before I hopped in bed and turned on a movie. February 19th, 2023 - I slept in on this day so my social media use did not begin until 9:30 am. I spent about an hour and a half browsing socia...

Metrics and Analytics: lj2

In class we were given two short readings from the book "We Are Data" by John Cheney-Lippold. After reading the preface and the introduction to the book I can now agree that humans are data. Major tech companies like google keep notes on almost everyone that has an online presence. Not only do companies use you for your data, but national  governments   surveillance those who have an online presence as well. Cheney-Lippold (2017) states that "In a database far, far away, you have been assigned a gender, ethnicity, class, age, education level and potentially status of parent with x number of children" (p. 3). He later states in the same paragraph that there is potential you may be listed as a terrorist to the U.S. National Security Agency. This is enough information to sway my belief of data collection and storage.  The ethics of data collection and storage are two sided and can be controversial. On one hand, data can be used fo...

Hands-On Assignment 2

Social media are internet-based platforms and technologies to facilitate communication and interaction between users. This can include platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, among others. Social networking refers to the use of these platforms to connect with others, share information, and build relationships. It allows users to create and maintain a personal profile, share content and messages, and join groups or communities with similar interests. I use a few different social media sites.      The social media sites that I use are Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and Tik Tok. next I will describe what I mainly use each site for. Twitter is used for memes and connecting with other communities. Instagram and snapchat are for communicating with friends and family. Youtube is for entertainment and learning. Tik Tok is only for entertainment. Much of my social media use is taken up by entertainment. I very rarely post anyt...

My thoughts on Social Media LJ#1

Hello people of the internet!       Social media apps have rules and regulations that you have to follow when using them. But there are other unwritten rules of social media platforms that people follow as well. Here are some dos and don'ts I believe that you should follow when using social media. I will be starting with things that you should do while using social media. Be aware of what you post on the internet because it will be out there on the internet until the end of time. Stay connected with friends and family on personal accounts that you do not mind people seeing what you post as well as who you follow. Having a personal account as well as private account is something I recommend doing while using different social media sites. This helps to separate your public and private interests. Being authentic is something that you should do while using social media. Being yourself on social media will help you to be more comfortable with yourself in real life. Here a...

Welcome to my blog!

Hello people of the internet! My name is Brad Vice and I am from Punta Gorda, Florida. I currently live in Brandon, Florida: located 10 miles east of Tampa. I am a junior at the University of South Florida (USF). I am majoring in information science with a concentration in information security.  As a Floridian, you may suspect my favorite Professional football team to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the Miami Dolphins. But I am actually a fan of the New England Patriots. My father has a friend who played for them from 2001-2007. He came over for a barbecue, showed me his Super Bowl rings, and signed a replica patriots mini-helmet for me when I was 4 years old. Without understanding the significance of what they meant, I became a fan of the New England Patriots.  Although I love watching football, I have never played organized football. I was always skinnier than other kids my age; until around my senior year of high school. I began to take an interest in health and fitnes...
